Problem: Lead exposures in children continue to be a concern in many areas of the United States, including Massachusetts.
Solution: In August 2023, the Pediatric Environmental Health Center and Region 1 PEHSU developed the Take the Lead-on-Lead
Program. The lead education and test kits that the program piloted continue to help patients
today. This innovative program uses telemedicine visits for education, virtual home inspections, and
individualized resource allocation to improve access for pediatric patients with lead poisoning.
Impact: The majority of patients who participated experienced a decrease in repeat blood lead levels of at least 20%. To date, Region 1 has distributed approximately 100 kits, with at least 20 more to come.
