Please register below to join us on Monday, November 16 at 7PM for: “Childhood Cancer and the Environment: From Emerging Evidence to Clinical Care and Community Action” featuring Omar Shakeel, MD & Erica Guerrero, PA-C

Omar Shakeel, MD, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics, Division of Hematology-Oncology, at Baylor College of Medicine and a board-certified pediatric hematologist-oncologist who provides clinical care at Texas Children’s Hospital. Throughout his training, families frequently asked what might have contributed to their child’s cancer and how they could reduce the risk of future health problems. These conversations inspired his interest in the role of environmental exposures in the development of pediatric cancers and the long-term health of survivors.

Dr. Shakeel currently serves as the lead physician in the Long-Term Survivor Clinic at Texas Children’s Hematology and Cancer Center. He is a member of the Scientific Advisory Council for the Childhood Cancer Prevention Consortium and member of the Childhood Cancer and the Environment Program, a national initiative of the Pediatric Environmental Health Specialty Units. His clinical and research work focuses on integrating environmental health into pediatric oncology care, addressing potentially modifiable health risks, and improving long-term outcomes for children and survivors of childhood cancer.

Erica Guerrero, MS, MPAS, PA-C is a Physician Assistant in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso. She holds a Master of Science in Biohazardous Threat Agents and Emerging Infectious Diseases from Georgetown University and a Master of Physician Assistant Studies from Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. Since 2018, Ms. Guerrero has served as a core collaborator with the Southwest Center for Pediatric Environmental Health, part of the Region 6 Pediatric Environmental Health Specialty Unit (PEHSU). Through this work, she has developed a focus on pediatric environmental health and the ways environmental exposures intersect with health disparities, community health, and clinical care.

She also serves as a Childhood Cancer and the Environment Program (CCEP) Champion, supporting education and collaboration around environmental exposures and childhood cancer. Her work emphasizes translating environmental health information into practical strategies for clinicians, community health workers, families, and underserved communities.
