Grand Rounds: Boston Children’s Path to Sustainability

Kate Lewandowski, SM, will provide background on the development of a consolidated environmental sustainability effort across an academic medical center, as well as current challenges and opportunities related to decarbonization of operations and efforts to advance the health and wellbeing of patients, staff, and communities through community partnership and policy advocacy.

Learning Objectives: 

At the conclusion of this educational program, learners will be able to:

  1. Understand the range of issues being addressed at Boston Children’s in the context of environmental sustainability and the ways that sustainability connects to the operational efficiency efforts and missions an academic medical center
  2. Appreciate the challenges of decreasing greenhouse gas emissions in a hospital setting and the opportunities for both process improvement and innovation at the level of a single institution and partnership across the health care industry to effect change
  3. Gain awareness of ways that Boston Children’s is working in coalition to address environmental concerns in our approaches to community health and policy advocacy
