Empowering Community Health Workers Through a New Household Chemical Hazards Flipbook in Texas

Problem: There is a lack of accessible, culturally relevant educational materials for promotoras (community health workers) working with border communities on household chemical safety. Families in this region often face environmental health risks, and promotoras needed practical tools to help them identify hazards and reduce exposure.

Solution: Region 6 developed a bilingual flipbook designed specifically for promotoras. This process included reviewing existing materials, identifying common household exposures, and adapting content to reflect the literacy levels and cultural context of families along the U.S.-Mexico border. The book incorporates visuals and step-by-step guidance.

Impact: The positive impact of this activity extends beyond the initial development phase. The flipbook now provides a standardized, evidence-based training resource that will be used in upcoming promotora trainings, expanding its reach and ensuring consistent health messaging across border communities.
