Problem: A Sunoco ETP jet fuel line in Mayfield Township, PA, leaked into groundwater and a community member, and mother of three, called with her concerns about it getting into her well water. Fuel oils contain contaminants such as benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes.
Solution: Region 3 advised that the community member have her well water tested for jet fuel components by a lab that is certified to conduct drinking water tests. Region 3 recommended using bottled water for drinking and cooking, and bathing at an alternate location away from the spill until they receive their water test results. Region 3 also worked with a toxicologist from the PA Department of Health to share recommendations with the community member regarding the need for lead testing.
Impact: The community member shared the information Region 3 provided with 167 people in her community.
