Problem: A community group from Fort Mill, South Carolina, reached out to Region 4 PEHSU, with concerns about a Silfab Solar manufacturing plant with plans to build a facility just a few hundred feet from a future school site intended for young children. The community asked PEHSU for guidance on the risks of exposing young children to silane gas.
Solution: Region 4 PEHSU to met with the community group and wrote a formal letter outlining the potential health impacts to the community. The letter cited scientific evidence and recommended further assessment of the health risks to children and pregnant women at the Silfab location.
Impact: The letter was presented at court hearings, helped the community gain the attention of local media outlets and hear a response from the school district. In May 2025, Fort Mill Schools began working with Citadel EHS, a third-party consulting firm, to conduct an assessment and environmental review of the plant.
