Problem: Parents of students who have been present during school construction projects that includes paving and welding, are concerned about the cumulative exposures of air pollutants and chemicals over a long period of time for their children. Children complained of headaches, dizziness, and strong odors during construction periods.
Solution: Since 2023, Region 3 PEHSU has helped parents and school administrators understand the health risks for children exposed to chemicals and polluted air during construction at their school. PEHSU provided instruction to parents about how to interpret Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) findings, and contacted school administrators to advocate for safe practices during school construction. They collaborated with the EPA, and recommended that construction activities occur outside of school hours.
Impact: The school district shared resources that the PEHSU suggested with families. Parents are working with the state to address policies that are protective of children’s environmental health. The PEHSU education and information sharing has proved valuable in adding to healthier construction policies for schools.
