The ultimate key to prevention and treatment is removal of the source. Families should be counseled about potential sources. If the source is still not identified, referral to local services for in-home assessments may be necessary. In cases where the child is symptomatic and/or the BLL ≥ 45 μg/dL, chelation therapy may be necessary. Acutely symptomatic children should be treated as medical emergencies.
