What Can Families and Communities Do to Lower their Exposure to Unhealthy Air Quality Outside?

Know your air quality.

Look up average air quality levels in your neighborhood (see Additional Resources section). If levels are at or above the 40-60 range near your home year round, ask your pediatrician how air pollution can be added to your child’s asthma action plan. Consider taking extra precautions, such as the actions below.

Look up the air quality forecast for today using AirNow.gov to see if it’s a good air day. If the AQI is around 50-90, consider avoiding or significantly reducing heavy outdoor exercise for your child that day, especially in the higher range. If AQI is around or above 100 avoid heavy outdoor exercise altogether and limit time outdoors. If outdoors during high pollution days, and/or wildfires, have your child use a N95 mask fitted for kids.
